A collection of diaries, correspondence, press clippings, postcards, printed notices and other memorabilia pertaining to World Wars I and II, written or collected by Norman McLaren Young. This material includes an official war diary onboard "Suevic", 1919; Young's diary kept whilst he was a sergeant, 1917-1918; letters to Dorothy Cambridge whom he later married, his mother, and William Hughs, Prime Minister; folders of typescript relating to army training, Northern Territory and New Guinea. Norman McLaren Young, known as "Mac", was born in Coolgardie and later moved to Victoria with his family. He served as Sergeant in the first Australian Imperial Force in World War I, where he was a signaller in the 13th and 14th Battalions. In World War II he served as Major as a signals instructor in Victoria, Northern Territory and New Guinea. After the war he studied and became a chartered accountant.
